Our charcoal is an entirely natural product and contains no additives. Its structure allows it to light easily without the aid of air-polluting and food-tainting firelighters. Watch our video guide to lighting a HomeGrown barbecue, or follow the simple guidelines below.
1. Crumple 5-10 sheets of newspaper and place in the barbecue to create a bed. You can also use an egg box placed on the barbecue base.
2. Add two large handfuls of coals (small and medium size) on top of the newspaper or into the egg box and light the newspaper/egg box.
Leave for 5-10 minutes to allow the coals to catch light and then add a few more coals to create an even bed. You need fewer than you might think as our charcoal will burn hotter for longer than many alternatives, such as imported lumpwood and briquettes.
3. After 15 minutes, the coals will be ready for cooking on.
There's a bit of a knack but once you’ve got it, it’s very easy!
